How fit & DPI are calculated
Aspect ratio decides the fit. A printable fills a frame edge-to-edge — no cropping — only when their aspect ratios match. A 2:3 design fits 2:3 frames (8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 24×36) cleanly; a 4:5 frame is a different shape, so the same file needs a crop or a border to fit. The chart marks each size Fits cleanly, Minor crop, or Wrong shape.
DPI decides the sharpness. Dots-per-inch is just your pixels divided by the print's inches: DPI = pixels ÷ print inches. The same file is sharp at small sizes and too soft at large ones. We use the limiting axis — the edge that has to stretch the most — so the number is honest rather than flattering.
300 DPI is the print-shop standard for crisp, close-up prints. But large wall art is viewed from across a room, where roughly 150 DPI still reads sharp — so a poster that's “only” 150 DPI is often perfectly fine. Both thresholds are editable above.
This chart is a buyer-guidance graphic, not a print guarantee. Actual sharpness also depends on the printer, the paper, and viewing distance. Nothing you enter or upload leaves your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I make a wall art size chart for my Etsy listing?
- Enter your design's pixel dimensions (or upload the file to read them), pick which frame sizes to show, add your shop name, and download the branded chart as a PNG — all free, no signup.
- Which frame sizes does my printable fit?
- A printable fits a frame cleanly only when their aspect ratios match. A 2:3 design fits 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 with no cropping; other ratios need a small crop or a border. The chart shows the fit for every size you select.
- What DPI do I need for wall art prints?
- 300 DPI is the print-shop gold standard for sharp prints. Large wall art viewed from a distance still looks good at 150 DPI. The tool computes DPI (pixels ÷ print inches) for each size and flags it Sharp, OK for large prints, or too low-res.
- What size should a printable wall art file be?
- For a 2:3 ratio, a 4000 × 6000 px file prints sharp up to 24×36 inches at ~167 DPI. Match your file's longest pixel edge to the largest size you want to sell, aiming for at least 150–300 DPI at that size.
- Is this wall art size chart maker really free?
- Yes — the chart and PNG download are free and unlimited with a small credit. A one-time $9 unlock removes the credit and adds your logo, brand colors, PDF export, and extra layouts.
